Need advice on a 1275

Hi guys - I went and looked a used 1275 that has 76K total miles on her.

Oil pressure was 70 at start but we didn't running her long enough to get hot - engine is out of the car.

Her compression figures were 160 - 150 - 145 - 145.

This looks like it is right on the edge of acceptable, and am wondering if you think it makes sense to buy it in drop it into the Bugeye. She currently has a 1098 that is most likely needs to be rebuilt.

I put so few miles on the cars that I'm thinking that if OK the 1275 could hold me over for a long time...

You are prob correct but why not do a refresh rather than a rebuild.

ie rings rod and main bearings. That would prob hold it for another 30K.

I wouldn't put an 'unknown' engine in... (is your current engine shot?)

As Jack says... as long as the bores measure out OK, a hone & re-ring would offer a little peace of mind. Gives you the chance to do the bearings, head gasket and check things over. With the engine out of the car, shouldn't take long.

(famous last words...)

So what I am debating is jumping straight in to a 1275 since I have a feeling that I'll end up there at some point anyway for the extra grunt and easier parts availablity.

The plan is to find one that would give me an ability to drive it for some time before needing a rebuild. I'm kind of up to my ears in projects so I was looking to move the ball forward here but without taking on a big new project....

(kind of sounds like half-XXXing it doesn't it....)

Hello,
I had a 1098 in my 66 sprite. The 1275 I fitted is the best performance improvement I could have for the money. Since your 1098 is not original IMO put the 1275 in and stop spending money on the 1098. If the 1098 were the stock motor well then the discussion would be different. The 1275 is so easy to get parts for, the 1098 can be a challenge. I am not saying it is a bad motor just tough finding parts. I am storing my 1098, as it is still a good re build able motor and also the original for my car.

Cheers Phil
