My Brake MC Reservoir Fix Works!

Finally took my car out for a shakedown run and did a lot of braking. Not one, not even a drip of brake fluid sweat from around the lid of the master cylinder reservoir. My gasket I cut out of a sheet of rubber I found that is ever so slightly thicker than the OE gasket material. I offered pieces of this rubber to anyone that wanted it FREE. Roman was my only taker. Now that I know that it <span style="font-style: italic">really</span> works perfectly and is road tested, I will sell small sheets to anyone that wants it for $50.00 a piece. Seems reasonable to me to protect a $4K paint job.

That was humor on my part. They are still free for the taking. The gasket goes under the reservoir cap.

Lots easier (and cheaper !) to just use silicone fluid ...

Plus of course, that fancy gasket doesn't protect against the inevitable MC leak.

<span style="color: #990000">Oh. I just spread a piece of cooking foil
across the MC opening and screwed the top on. No leaks so far.

To change to silicon in a system that has always has Dot 3 is not really cheap. Don't you have to change all the seals, totally clean out the system, etc.?

The Dot 3 works great for me, especially now that I no longer have leaks.....

Dale- That creates a vapor lock in the system

Hi Bill,
Thanks for the gasket material. It is good to know that the fix does work. I plan to get to it as soon as my new garage is built. Right now I feel like a fish out of water since I can't locate many of my tools and my back yard has a big bare spot where a garage once stood!

Nope, not necessary at all. Best perhaps, but you can reap the benefit to your paint by just bleeding the silicone through until you get clear purple fluid at each wheel.

I've done it that way several times now, and in one case (Winnebago) it actually stopped a seal from leaking.<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:]The Dot 3 works great for me, especially now that I no longer have leaks..... [/QUOTE]No argument with that, except eventually it will leak again.

At TRfest a few years back, there was an absolutely gorgeous TR4 with what had to be a $5000+ paint job ... ruined by a leaking MC. Literally started to leak on the way to the show. The judges took pity on him (tho I don't recall if he got the gold or the Uff-Da award) but still ...

Bill,

I'll take you up on that offer for a piece of that gasket material. I just found my new M/C "sweating" around the cover tonight as I opened the hood and checked the oil for the weekend.

Never buy gum in the service station bathroom. It tastes like rubber.

Bill,

Is this sheet of rubber something I could purchase locally?

I am sure. I purchased the sheet from a shop that specializes in rubber fittings for the oil industry. Kinda unique. It is the same exact rubber as used in the brake reservoir. PM me your mailing address and I will sent you just enough to make one gasket. Don't worry about the postage. I steal stamps from the office. (Wait a minute! It's my office!)
