Media blasting

Talked to the local (Newport News, VA) blasting outfit. Man says they can blast the whole car for $400, top, bottom, interior, everything. Is this a reasonable price, or should I look elsewhere?
He also told me I can bring pieces in individually, and when they have enough to do a bunch, they blast them all. Says it would save me some $$$, if I am not in too big a rush.

Oh WOW!!! I think that's a GREAT price... As long as you're at it, I've got some "stuff" he can clean!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif Times like this I wish I still lived on Buckroe Ave!

Don,

Thats what I paid for the same work. I did have to have them hit a few places better as they went a little fast. In fact I had to use my small pot blaster on a few spots ont he bottom of the car so inspect closely or be there to watch the progress if you can.

After blasting you'll know the 'real' story of your tubs condition.

Post some pics!!!!

Yup, I was quoted $1k for blasting and another $1.8 for painting.
'Tis a good price.

Indeed... "rusty chassis flex" is really a four letter word.

"The Plan" is to get the blasting done BEFORE I do any body work, so I know what I got /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Is what I paid as well, with a bit more blasting after the fact on a few spots. sounds like a good ie great price on painting, not much body work I would guess.

Keep in mind he is going to use 500 dollars or more in materials.

you should consider having the tub primered right after blasting. it's a little more but the tub will begin to rust soon after the blast and then you will have to have it blasted again.

Same day trip to body shop.

Priming is a touch extra, but I am going there. I usta fix airplanes in a VERY salt atmosphere...think ocean. Corrosion is one thing I understand /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Better to supply the primer to your blaster. They will usually use the cheapest rattle cans they can buy. You might want to consider investing in a high quality primer that is compatible with your final paint system. A good paint distributor can put it into spray cans for you to drop off with the car.

Dont use just any primer. Use a quality Epoxy primer such as PPG. That coat seals the metal and makes a mechanical bond with the freshly blasted surface. A quality 2K primer should follow that within the manufacturers recoat window otherwise the epoxy has to be scuffed with 220 and reapplied prior to further top coats. Your painter will know all of this but you need to be aware of the importance of the first coat of epoxy before the microscopic flash rust starts forming.

that's what this shop has, an epoxy primer that matches my body shop .. all is good
