Evacu-sump installation

I got the Summit crankcase evacuation system installed and tested yesterday. It seems to pull a good vacuum at idle, in fact it is pulling oil up the hose and into the exhaust. No more mosquitos in my neighborhood, but the neighbors were a bit alarmed!

I have a port on the fuel pump pad connected to the vent tube on the valve cover and then on to the evacu-sump unit. It looks like all will be well if I just install an air-oil separator in the line. Meanwhile I am capping the vacuum device until the catch bottle arrives.

Bottom line, the Summit kit works as advertised, needs a separator, but I cannot comment on fitting to a Spridget since my car is very different.

I installed the Moroso air/oil separator today and it works great: no more oil being drawn into the exhaust to smoke out the mosquitos. As far as minimizing the amount of oil weeping from the scroll seal, only time will tell. I can't see how it couldn't help, there is a good vacuum even at idle. It was an easy installation once I gathered the necessary hoses and fittings. I found that it was easier to keep most of the hoses 5/8", but I had to use 1/2" on the valve cover and 3/8 on the timing chest.

On a side note I got 36 mpg this week on a 200 mile tour with the Tucson British Car Registry to Arivaca, it was mostly a slow drive through the wildfires and I kept it at 50 to 60 most of the way down. The drive back, I got on the Interstate and ran at 85 for about 30 miles, then it was crosstown traffic and stoplights the rest of the way home. BTW the engine is around 3500 rpm at 85 with the Datsun 5-speed, the 4.22 rear and 15" tires. It still has good torque and will pull strongly at that speed in 5th gear although I haven't had it over 100 yet. I am curious to see what the top speed is with the motor in this configuration.

Thanks for posting.

Excuse my ignorance, but did you tap into your exhaust pipe for the vacuum?
Also, is there a drain tap on the separator?
Did you fabricate the pipe yourself on the fuel pump outlet?

If you get a chance some photos would be nice.

I'm pleased it worked for you and it certainly looks the part, judging from the pics on the moreso web page.

Cheers!

I had the tube from the Summit kit welded into my exhaust header, I have an LCB steel exhaust. I was worried that it would be too big since the kit is sized for a big V-8, but it seems to work well. Yes there is a drain fitting, but it currently has an AN cap on it. I bought a pipe to barb adapter at a hydraulic supply place and screwed it into the port on the fuel pump pad under the exhaust pipes. I sealed up the two vents in the oil filler cap with sealant and have a rubber plug in the dipstick port. The whole idea is to pull a vacuum on the inside of the engine and keep oil from leaking out, to do that everything has to be sealed. All the hoses are heater hose and all fittings, elbows, tees and reducers are from the Help Board at my local auto parts store.

Thanks for the info!
I suppose on my 1500 Midget I could use the threaded hole on the manifold where the EGR used to be.
Cheers!

The fitting needs to be put somewhere there is a pulsation in the exhaust, they suggest it be just downstream of where the collectors come together. You also need a free flow exhaust system since any back pressure will pressurize the system, not create a vacuum. I suspect this idea is more suited for a race type vehicle (which my Westfield is) than a stock street car.
