Double row timing chains - worth doing on a 1275?

For the 1275 which is out of the car at this point, figure access will never be better but not sure it is worth pursuing.

What do you think guys?

So what is actually needed for the conversion?

New dual change and sprocket for sure, but anything else?

I thought all 1275's came with double row timing chains. With the engine out of the car, I think you ought to pull the timing chain cover and take look. You'll likely be pleasantly surprised.

I think they all had double row.

I believe 1275's all came with double row sprocket/chains as well.
I would be very surprised if they aren't already on the engine, even so, strongly urge replacing them while you have the engine so accesible. You just need order double row sprockets and chain....you might want to check with Mini Mania also as their source may be better qualtiy than Moss or VB.

I'm obviously learning here, so I'll pull the timing cover and see what lurks behind.

Well that brings up a good, related point.

This engine has good oil pressure, doesn't smoke, and have nice even compression. So I think I'm good for now on bearings etc, but what else should I be doing now since I have good access to her? Seals and other things I should be thinking about?

Thanks!

The only seal I can think of, which is significantly easier to replace with the engine out, is the timing-cover seal around the crank pulley. You'll want to replace the cover gasket too, since you'll be taking the cover off.

I'm of the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" school, so I think it's wise not to mess with the bearings and such.

I also thought all the 1275s had dual-row chains. When I bought a chain for the 1275 I've been working on, there was only one listed in the catalog.

Good point Roy!

Too cheap not to do now vs. the pain of pulling everything again.

Thanks for the help guys - appreciate it.

Had a 10CC 1098 with a single chain that I could turn the crank a quarter turn before the distributor rotor moved!!! Double row for everything you can put them in I would say. KA

Word of advise, while the engine is out, replace the front seal in the tranny! Real cheap, but if you don't, it'll leak later. Duh,

I wonder how I know that!

Good point. Of course, it will probably leak if you do replace it, but still, keep the faith!

By the way--look on ebay for clutch parts. I often see new clutches for sale there, dirt cheap.

If you're using the original tranny that has'nt been modified for a seal there's none to replace!!!
Maybe fit one!!! KA

Thanks guys - I scored a rebuild rib-case that will go in at the same time, but will check the seals etc on that as well. Thanks for the reminder!
