TR6 TR6 Spin-on adaptor installation - double check me

I just finished installing the Moss kit and it was actually pretty easy. Clearance wasn't an issue, my filter is mounted horizontally pointing.

From the instruction in the kit that seems to be an OK position, but I wanted to check with the group here to double check. Think that is OK?

One nice finding is that the sludge that I had to remove when changing her filter previous is totally gone and the old oil actually looked pretty good this time around (albeit on relatively few miles)!

Well, I'm new to TR6s but I thought one of the main reasons for the spin-on was to avoid having the oil drain out of the filter when the engine is off. I would think that mounting the filter in a more vertical position would be preferred.

It definitely should be vertical. I have a picture at home that I can post later if you need it.

This is the way that mine mounts and I think that it's the Moss kit.

Thanks Paul - I initially tried that configuration but the angle was off just slightly and the filter wouldn't clear the clutch hydraulics.

Did i do something wrong?

I think Paul has a long filter. You can also use a shorty if you want.

Yes, you may have the slave cylinder mounted 180 degrees off from where it should be, which results in a VERY tight fit against the filter. That is why I posted the picture from that angle. Just unbolt the slave cylinder and turn it over and you'll see that the line will clear.

Ask me how I know all about this and why I took the picture.

Well, don't bother. I'm sure that you've figured that out already.

I am using a long filter, Fram PH3600. I still have her up on the jack stands so I'll take another look in the AM.

It was really close to fitting per the picture that Paul (thanks again Paul!) posted...

Paul - how the heck do you keep your undercarriage so clean!?!?

If you haven't done so, any location where the oil hoses run close enough to rub against other parts of the car, should be protected. Just slide a larger hose over them.

Also, while you are putting better filters stay away from FRAM. They really are about as close to the bottom of the line as is possible (in terms of internal construction) Take a look around on the web. Lots of people out there get their kicks out of analyzing oil filters. The filters made by Wix tend to be preferred. (Napa (Napa gold filters) sell them among others)

I agree with the comment concerning Fram. I have been using this Wix unit which is available at Napa. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/iagree.gif

It's not really that clean. Just a flattering camera angle, if anything. I have an order in to Por's for the cleaner and rust sealer, along with the cans of Por-15 to coat it.

I also have the Eastwood package, so I'll try them both on different areas to see which one I like better. From what I'm reading, the Eastwood is MUCH longer to dry.

Sorry, now back to YOUR thread............

Fixed it! Yeah.

It is installed vertically now.

Thanks for everyone's help.

The only problem mounting your filter totally vertically is when you may have to bleed your clutch slave cylinder you will have to remove your oil filter. Ask me how I know this. I have mine canted slightly forward, along with the fact that I have oil cooler hoses coming off the front of the adapter, and I don't have any problems. Oh, and I like Frams, just me....

The Fram PH 3600 is just fine. Is it absolutely the best? Perhaps not, although it's far from the worse, but it's certainly up to the job. Considering the original arrangement, virtually any proper spin-on is a quantum leap forward.

Good morning!

I was actually able to get mine installed in a nearly downward vertical position - like Paul's picture - after some adjustments to how my fuel line ran through the area.

My oil pressure did come up a bit with the filter mounted pointing down compared to sideways.

I can't speak as to long term impact to having it more "sideways", but I'm sure the board will jump in here.

Let us know how it goes.
