TR2/3/3A Double check me on this - TR3a trans & diff fluids

Hi guys - can you confirm that I needed regular 20w50 motor oil in the gear box and GL4 75-90 EP read axle/differential?

I thought I saw something about using a different oil in the gearbox of early TRs like the 3a due to brass in the gearbox.

The same Gl4 75-90 EP can be used in the steering box as well, right?

She is a 1958 3a without a first gear synchro.

Owner's manual calls for 90W in both gearbox and rear axle. So I would imagine that 75W90 should be fine for both.

In 58, the owner's manual still called for motor oil in the OD.

Except if you have an overdrive. Then you want to consider using a straight 30wt or 20w50 valvoline racing motor oil. I've use the 20w-50 for the last ten seasons with out a problem.

Interesting... I was quoting the "Practical Hints for the maintenance of the Triumph T.R.3" book, which says gear oil.

So was I /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

There are different editions of "Practical Hints" with different information. The change to recommending gear oil in the gearbox happened around 1960 or so.

Without the OD, I'd probably go for GL4. But Laycock specifically warned against it for the A-type.
