Anybody actually done this?

Also anybody ever put a J-type into an early TR6?

I'd guess you need an adaptor for the trans. mount...

After I posted that I went back and read the article myself.

I agree ... That is way more complicated than I would have expected.

Well, don't forget that most of what John put on that site is the same stuff you would do to convert to OD even with Triumph components. The mainshaft has to be changed either way.

And you can skip disassembling the OD by using an external ratio adapter for the speedo.

I've converted my '71 4-speed to an overdrive using the volvo laycock unit. Amassing the parts and doing the work really isn't that difficult. Once you have the gearbox opened you simply replace the mainshaft and while you're there go ahead and replace any parts as necessary to have a freshly rebuilt tranny. The overdrive is simply a bolt on but for having to switch out the speedo drive gear. As for mounting the unit to an early frame there are a number of aftermarket conversion mounts available as well as some home-built designs.
