Crane Vs Pertronix

Hello Everybody,

I am new to the forum here and have a 1965 BJ8. Starting to have some work done on it and not the best mechanical guy in the world. I know my limitations as the saying goes. I am thinking of upgrading to an electronic ignition for the car. I have seen the Pertronix and the crane solid state ignitions. I know they are not stock. I am using my baby as a driver. Not worried about awards here. Any recommendations on which is better. I have heard that the Pertronix fail because of the heat after awhile. Anybody experience that?

Thanks

Tony

Tony this is just my opinion but I have a 1965 Ford truck with a 390 that we used for pulling the Kart racing trailer with and I installed a Pertronix in it over 5 years ago and it has never missed a beat. I am leaning toward installing one in the car I am doing now. Skip

Tony,
Usually the only time that a Pert ignition fails is if a coil of the wrong resistance is used with the unit. The coil primary resistance should be no less than 1.5 ohms on six cylinder cars & 3 ohms on four cylinder cars.

Some years back Pert produced some failure prone units & the stigma from this still lingers today. The more recent units seem to be as reliable as anything available. One warning is to not leave the ignition switch on for extended periods with the engine not running, but I have never known of this to cause a failure either.

Kart racing trailer?

What kind? Not the trailer, the kart

I have recently taken an interest in Vintage Karts, something similar to the McCulloch kart I had as a kid...

Our local SCCA club has several people that run new(er) karts at our autocross events too.

Randy; we ran the WKA series, down south most are on clay dirt tracks but some were asphalt. We ran 3 karts, one champ kart, one over 35 kart and a modified. Hey 75 to 80 mph on a clay 1/2 mile oval is a blast. I loved it but it was becoming more and more like a full time job to be competitive. You had to work all week to run at the front on sat night.
