Attaching Rear Wings

What method did the factory use to attach the rear wings on BJ8's at the shut face? One side of my car has pop rivets and the other side has pop rivets and a few plug welds. Both wings have been off before and some repairs done. I'm restoring the Healey and trying to use correct fasteners and methods. Thanks.

Hi Dough, The rear wings were attached at the shut face panel utilising 8 flat head machine screws, flat washers,Lock washers and nuts on each side-Fwiw--Keoke

:iagree: That is correct. The heads of the screws get painted body color, even though most of them are covered up with the aluminum facing and rubber windlacing. The nuts can barely seen from behind by looking into the wheel well.

Many thanks guys. The wings are off at this time and I'm replacing the metal at the attachment edges on the shut faces and the lips on the wings because of too many large holes from drilling out welds and pop rivets.

I have a workshop manual. Don't know if it's an original workshop manual. I'll have to take another look. It is not the Haynes, I do have that one too. The car and the manual is 70 miles from me today at my Brother's shop in Deer Trail, CO. He has a lift and well equipped body shop. Been scraping, grinding, sanding, removing paint and applying epoxy primer to the frame for the last several days. The original color was Colorado Red, previous owner changed it to the golden beige covering up too much bondo. The frame was left red however. Replaced the lower panel on the front shroud.

Ya,ya, that's the one!
Now that it's in front of me the picture is on page P.3, and it's Fig. P.5. Technically the illustration is of an early BN1 shut face but the fasteners here are all identical.

Okay guys, looked in the workshop manual. LOW and behold There was the photo of the eight screws on the shut face just like it was stated. Didn't know the manual had that sort of detail. I just might take a look in the manual before I ask a question next time. But don't count on it. I want to check out the knowledge here. Update. Got epoxy primer on all of the frame today and lower body above the frame. Sure glad to get rid of all the red. Rear seats are out and have the primer on the bottom of the pans also. Will paint them black.
