TR4/4A Alternator or alternator in a generator case?

I’m considering upgrading the charging system of my ’63 TR4.
The car is already converted to negative ground.

So I’m facing some choices, do I use a “stock” alternator or an alternator in a generator case?

For my use, I believe that a unit putting out 45 Amps or so would be enough.

I’m currently leaning toward using an alternator in a generator case since it keeps the "stock look".
Has anybody used an alternator in a generator case?
Any good or bad experiences?

A number of my SoCal Healey friends have used the Dynamator (looks like generator) with success. One was DOA on a 25 mile drive after installation and was replaced without question.

We're in the LA/Orange County area so heat is not as extreme as in Palm Springs or the desert area. There's a fellow here from PS who may contribute to this thread.

I consider them marginal because they use the same fan/pulley as the generator and therefore spin slower and do not cool as well.

The Densos I like have a smaller pulley for higher speed with dual internal fans.

This 40 amp "Mini Chevy" unit for around $61 has the same configuration as the GM, so if those are used on Triumphs, this would fit. I like it because it isn't huge and IMO the size looks more appropriate in a LBC.

The GM alt is an easy install and cheap.You remove the generator stand and cut a bit off the alt to align the pully
The Tr pully can be reamed to fit the GM and you are in business for cheap I got mine in chrome.....

My Dynamator died on a trip up country.
That was a costly trip as I bought another battery to get me back home on a semi dead alternator.
They use the pulley and fan from the old generator and as the gentleman above said spin slower and cool less.
Plus they are next to the exhaust.
Mine fried and is being replaced under warranty.
In the meantime I'm back to the generator.
I'd wrap the exhaust to lower the temp next time as I think that the exhaust was the main cause.
