948 cc on An Engine Stand

More questions from the New Guy. During the winter I will be rebuilding my 948 cc engine. I bought a engine stand from Harbor Freight ( www.harborfreight.com ). The stand is rated to 1,000 lb. The Bugeye engine is about 250lb. The mounting plate on the stand has 4 mounting points. Looking at the 5/16" bolt holes at the rear of the block, it seems like a frail mounting at least. I bought 2 1/2" long stainless bolts but it seems like under kill. Will the engine caseing hold the weight?

yes, it should be no problem. if your really nervous you can cut a length of board to fit under the front of the block as added support

My word, what an idea, an engine stand. WOW!

I know I have built at least six engines without a stand, what a lovely thing.

Check out Harbor Freights web site. Looks like you may be needing one if you get another Bugeye. The stand was on sale at a local Harbor Freight store. 1000 lb.capacity, 4 position rotation and steel casters. Not a bad investment for $35.00.

Not if, when and in what condition.

Headquarters has approved the idea, in fact thought it was a good one.

Many people mount their A series engines "sideways" on the stand. It makes access to the busy ends easier. My engine isn't back from the machine shop yet or I'd send along a photo. I'll see if I can't get a shot of a friends. The last time I looked, he had his spare race engine mounted on his stand.

Hi,

You may want to do a little research before you hang that motor with stainless steel bolts. If the bolts are unrated, they may not be any stronger than regular ungraded steel bolts. Sure, they won't rust, but you'll have the motor done in the next couple of decades anyway, right? Use a Grade 8 bolt and don't worry about it. Just make sure you can get the bolts as far into the block casting as possible, and use stout washers to back up the bolt heads where they pass through the engine stand mounting holes.

Good luck,

Thom, somewhere I have the drawings for that side mount, with the proper distance from the mount bolts to the centerline of the tube. I'll see if I can find them and post in case someone wants to build their own.
It does make life a lot easier mounting them on the stand that way.

Why wouldn't it work on a 1275 engine?

Tony, when I get home from work tonight, I'll check for the drawings. I know I have them here somewhere, it's just a matter of finding them.

Here's a link to a drawing...

(It's "funny" that this topic is being discussed on another message board too)

I just take the stock engine stand mounting devise. You know, the cheap ones at the parts house or the kind you order off line. I then take the normal mounting ears off and weld a piece of 2"X 1/8" angle on edge on the of the face of the mount. drill two holes that match the alt. mount boss holes and bingo a side mount. Yes it works on a 1275 all day. I have all my stands modified like this. I just keep one unchanged for other type engines.
