wing mirrors

My 67 BJ8 does not have wing mirrors and I am thinking of installing them.

Was this a factory or dealer option?
Round Lucas or the conical "racing" type?
one side or both?

The car is a US market model but the car is now going to Canada which does not require a wing mirror prior to Jan 73 and then only 1 on the Drivers side

I can find the round Lucas ones but only flat glass. Anyone know of convex glass ones?

Hoghead,

I have convex mirrors which I bought from Moss. They work great, I can actually see what is behind me.

Do not put wing mirrors on your Healey. They don't work and they ruin the look of the car. If you are going to have mirrors, I recommend the small aluminium bullet type that can be easily fitted to the front of the doors.

Wing mirrors were a dealer option. I have two of the round Lucas ones, convex on the right, flat on the left. They work ok, but would be more useful closer to me.

This thread might give you some other ideas of mirrors that might clip on your door or be located inside.

As John indicated, wing mirrors were the most common and preferred mirrors from the dealer for all LBCs. When first purchasing my Healey, I immediately installed a set of popular Lucas wing mirrors but, because I was somewhat near sighted, I found them almost useless. However, I believe the Healey was inadvertently designed to grow old with and, as I have grown older and my sight transitioned toward farsightedness, the mirrors have become quite useful.

I liked the look of the wing mirrors then and prefer them still.

Both:
On my Blue over white 66 BJ8 the Heritage certivicate shows the SS bullet mirrors were factory installed. Dealers sprucing up cars did install both the bullet type and the standared[Lucas] wing type on both wings.--Keoke

Did the factory/Dealer install the bullet and or Lucas style style on the doors or front wings?

2 screw Lucas or the single stud mount version?

Now leaning towards the door mount

My opion is that they look much better without any wing mounted mirrors. Its a shame to spoil the beautiful lines. When I repaint my BJ8 I plan to remove the wing mounted mirror and make do with my clamp on quarterlight mirror.
Seems like mirrors were an after thought with the design as they are all pretty useless.

I agree that all Healeys look better without the mirrors. Plus the thought of drilling that large hole in the fender or shroud would scare me to death. I've had BJ8's and they all came with side mirrors already installed and did not want to tackle that hole if I pulled them off. Recently had a BN6 and used the mirrors available that mounted in the forward hole of the windshield post. My 100M uses small mirrors that mount off of the folding windshield mechanism. I would consider looking at the small mirrors sold by Moss like Jeepster mentions that mount off of the windshield posts to avoid those holes.
Regards,
Mike

I tried two of those clamp on mirrors but I couldn't stand the whistling they made. Took them off again and make do with the dash mirror and a quick look over my shoulder when the hood is up...

Shouldn't be anyone passing you anyway ;-) hahahaaa....

I do miss mirrors when reversing though...

I took the mirrors off one of my earlier cars. I shopped around and found some bolts with a shallow dome top and a shiney finish. They filled the holes quite nicely and saved on respraying two wings which already had a fantastic paint job.
