UGH Rant warning

Where to start. After driving all the way back from ND to CA with the final leg being from Pueblo CO to CA non stop causing major major butt fatigue I figured this morning I would pull the B out and make a trip to the auto part store on this incredibly sunny socal day to pick up some new grease fittings for my truck that have rusted shut and a giant socket and pitman arm puller as I need to change the steering box on my truck which is a PITA thanks to the dealer I took it to not doing the requested and scheduled work but that's a whole other rant

I get out to the B and find it parked outside which I somewhat expected as major work on the house is being done and the garage space was needed again. I find that the top is out and the full cockpit tonneau cover is sorta on. Seats are covered with a ton of leaves along with the rest of the cockpit so I spend the next 10 minutes doing a quick clean up. Popped the hood did a quick check all looks good hop in a key in the ignition and nothing. Battery is totally dead not to big of a deal bring my truck over and try to swing it into position and I spend the next 5 minutes doing a 25 point turn in a tight driveway thanks to a combination of a high friction driveway a steering box that is shot and 32 inch tires. You need to be the hulk to get the wheel to turn while stationary and he's going to break a sweat while doing it.

I finally get the cables attached and let it charge for a bit and finally get it to turn over and it starts right up. After the start I get this huge rattle and vibration directly under my feet. It turns out the exhaust pipe appears to have warped from heat and is now hitting a cross member. Another item to list of stuff to fix. I move the truck and hop in the B and take off down the driveway only to be greeted by a few misses. I take off down the street everything seems to have cleared up till I stopped at the first stop sign. As I sit waiting for a break in traffic I get the distinctive sound of a plastic bag being beaten by the exhaust stream. From experience that means one of 2 things there's a plastic bag back there or the choke is stuck on. Well the choke on that blasted ZS carb has stuck partially on so I end up swinging around the block and parking the B. Pop the hood and check the choke and externally everything is working like it should but it appears that the internals have shifted allowing the choke to still be partially on while in the off position. GRRRRR. I would go ahead and fix it but thanks to a small accident I sliced off 1/4 of the tip of my right thumb removing a stuck grease gun.

That was the finaly straw I'm done playng with the zs carb and the decision has been made to finally just replace the ZS carb and switch over to a Webber DGV and header from brittek. Hopefully my right thumb will heal up enough so I can go a head a fix the choke this weekend so I can take a good drive before the process of paint and body begins.

On a positive note the morspeed bumper I ordered has arrived and the new grill and fittings from a 73b have arrived so in about 3 weeks I can start paint and body.

Your B is just asking for more attention. The more you drive the better they run. That's all your fault you know.

Hey it could be worse, I pulled mine apart for paint job this winter and found a dodgy sill patch job and they were rusting inside out! Now I've learned to weld.

Today was much better. Thumb's heeled up enough not to worry about any more. Did a little wrenching on Thursday and while changing vacuum lines I had the distributor turn about 90 degree's in what was a nice and tight clamp. Ordered a new clamp late in the afternoon and the guy at moss got it out in time for Friday delivery. After fighting with the choke it finally gave in and started to behave correctly. I reinstalled the clamp and distributor and reset the timing and she's running fantastic again. I finally eliminated a miss that had been occurring at low rpm cruising and on Monday I'm going to see if I can find a muffler shop to bend the offending section of exhaust pipe away from the body. Hopefully I'll have time to take a nice drive or two before its ripped apart for paint and body.

Hey Stewart -
If you can't vent here, than where can you vent? Glad to hear things have improved though. Count your blessings - I have 2 days next week to see (read: work on) my B, then I'm out to Colorado for business - for two months. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif Then a week on the west coast, and then, hopefully, I'll get to work on the B in August. Man, that's a long time....
For what it's worth, I've gone with the Weber carb, and am quite happy - to no longer have to worry about the ZS carb.
Have a good one, and enjoy your drive time before the reconstructive surgery. (on the car, not the hand) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/driving.gif

Stewart, if you do go ahead with the carb swap, you may want to hang on to the old parts. You never know when the Cali gov will go flakey on us and change the emissions requirements again. Currently it's locked onto '76 and up for permanent emissions testing. So, depending on your point of view, yer a hair on a baby's butt away from emissions testing, or yer darn lucky that you don't have to run the tread mill for a good while (i.e. until someone in the gov sneezes in the wrong direction)...

Either way, good luck and hope you enjoy driving your 'B /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I'm keeping everything in well marked DON'T THROW OUT boxes. I have no doubt that at some point they will change the law. I wish they would at least use common since and allow us to modify the vehicle so it can meet or run much cleaner than required with aftermarket items. I'm positive the B will run cleaner for longer periods of time with the Webber than with the stock ZS carb. But CARB is a whole another rant.

true dat! I totally agree with ya there /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif I'm sure there's also a host of other parts that could be changed/redesigned to make the car even cleaner yet retain a relatively stock appearance under the hood. The smog pump system comes to mind, and how the EGR valve is mounted...

Sorry to hear about your Zenith problems. Unfortunately they occur too often.

I agree with the idea of replacing the carb, butg instead of a Weber, consider SU. Not only do they look like they belong on the car, but they are easier to work on. The performance is (arguably) the same or better than a Weber. If you are looking for higher performance, consider HS6s. But they won't do you much good with the stock cam.

Maynard beat me to it.
There are various SU carbs that will basically bolt on (or nearly so, with a bit of filing) to your stock manifold. You should be able to find something on eBay or a local foreign car repair-shop.
I had the Weber downdraft on a previous car. Honestly, I think the SU is better.
Just my 2 cents.

I would love to go with the SU's but finding a set and manifold that I can trust especialy on ebay is rather hard though if I find a good set I will go that route. The Webber seems to be the easiest route at the moment for better reliablity and preformance over the ZS carb.

I still have a bit of time to think about it though. Currently I'm in Japan and the B is sitting once again properly covered and hopefully it won't drip on the new drive way that was just put in or I will end up dumped in the pacific. I havent seen any MG's over here but I have seen at least a dozen of the real mini's in the last 2 days. 10 more days and I can take a last drive and then the fun and games begin assuming of course the B didn't decide to dump its vitals all over the ground.
