Mislabeled part rant... and weekend ramble...

Don't we just love our LBC's...

In an effort to cure a "clunking" noise coming from the rear of JerseyGirl's '79 Spit, I spent most of this past Saturday rebuilding the rear suspension... again...

Replaced trunnion bushings, new poly trailing arm bushings, new rear brake hoses, and new differential axle flanges. U-joints had been replaced prior (hence: 'again...').

The trunnion bushings weren't too bad except for one of them lacked the steel sleave - this was probably cause of the clunking.

The replacement flanges are a bit beefier so they should hopefulyl not distort over time like the originals did. However, this is where my rant begins...

The first flange wasn't a problem. The u-joint slid out of the old flange with little effort and the new one was pressed in place with a vice. Passenger side went together even easier...

"Sweet. I'll be done in time to have an evening brew before bed..."

Go to install it... and the bolts don't line up... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif fiddle some more... nope. Not gonna happen. Pull the axle out and compare the new flange with the old one. Not the same. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif Crap. What happened? Checked the parts bag. Yep, same part number... mislabeled. Ca ca... gotta remove the flange and reinstalled the better of the two old flanges so we can make it to a car show on Sunday. Of course, the u-joint not does NOT want to come out. Mount it in the vice... crank... crank... crank... POP! Spider blows out the end of the cap. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cryin.gif Well, at least I can get the spider out of the wrong flange now... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Now what do I do... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Well, fortunately, from owning three Volvo 1800ES's between us, we have amassed quite a collection of parts. Some of them being u-joints. Fortunately, the caps from an 1800ES drive shaft u-joint will also fit on the spider of a Spit axle joint. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

So, I get it all back together, drag a sleeping JerseyGirl off the couch to bleed the brakes, sent her out for a quick test drive (since I was too dirty to sit in the seats) and finally get to bed around 11 pm (no beer for me /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif ).

On Sunday, we attended the Cops & Rodders car show at DeVry University in New Brunswick, NJ. Had a good time, although very few foriegn cars were there, let alone LBCs. Two A-H's (a 100-4 and a 3000 Mk3), a TVR, a '52 MG TD, a friends '03 MCS, as well as two of our friends' Volvo 1800's. There must have also been a Mopar meet somewhere as there was even fewer of those... Corvettes, however, were in STRONG attendance. Plus, your usually collection of kit Cobras, muscle cars and various hot rods.

I still need to replace the shocks, bushings and other bits on the front of the Spitfire, but those will have to wait until after her Volvo is running. Keeping my fingers crossed... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
