TR6 Tachometer and distributor problem - '72 TR6

Anyone ever had the tachometer cable break off in the distributor? Well, I have and it's still there. I want the tachometer to work, but I need some advice on removing the distributor, especially since it's in a hard place to remove. Also the screws are nearly impossible to unscrew. Guess I need a screwdriver that is angled to fit. Anyway, once I do get it removed (advice please), do I have do disassemble the whole thing to get the techometer cable out? Thanks to anyone who might have a suggestion or went through this!!

Hello TR6web,
I didn't realise that the TR6 has a cable drive tachometer as my 2.5 saloon (same engine) has an electronic tachometer.
However, the mounting is the same. Remove the two bolts, (or maybe nuts, it can vary) that hold the distributor clamp to the block, and withdraw the distributor. This means you can replace it without disturbing the ignition setting. You should then be able to remove the tachometer drive spindle working on a bench. Good luck in removing the broken bit of cable.

Regards,
Alec

No I haven't exerperienced that; perhaps your tach gearing is frozen and that caused the failure. Simply remove the single nut holding the distributor to the pedestal and pull the distributor out. Don't fret as the offset distributor drive can only engage the drive dog one way. Then remove the 2 slotted screws holding the tach drive cover and remove it and the drive gear. I hope there is a bit of the broken end remaining for you to grab with pliers. Don't forget to lube the gear when reassembling.

Thanks, all. Just so you know, I believe the cable broke off since I tried to put a new one in it, and it won't go in. I kind of understand what to do with your help, but how do I get the screws off down by the block? It's in an impossible place. Is there a special screwdriver that you know of?

Help! I got the distrbutor off, no problem. Actually cleaned the thing up and everything around it on the engine. Now, I see the tach cable piece that's broke off in the gear. Problem is I have no idea how to get it out. And to top that off, no major company (TRF, Moss, Vict. Brit) makes it. It looks like the cable is turned inside and locked into place underneath small grooves. Any suggestions?

I found the perfect solution! Take a small drill bit (very small) and drill the sucker right out. Just make sure you don't nick the small supports inside that help hold the cable. Hope this helps anyone.
