Engine or Tachometer Odd Problem

Good morning everyone. My 1959 100-Six has always exhibited this problem: The rev counter slowly rises and when it reaches 3000 the car seems to go over-rev. In fact, out of fear, I never exceeded this limit. Can anyone tell me what it could be? Thanks.

Stefano--

You must give more facts:

1. What model car do you have, which will tell us whether or not you have an electronic tach.
2. Exactly what does "Go over-rev" mean? Is it simply the tach needle going higher or does the sound of the engine change or both?
3. Assuming you have a later car with an electronic tach, do your other instruments react in any way at 3K rpms?

Please give us as many facts as possible.

Stefano-Assuming you have a 100-6 with mechanical tack and the engine RPM is erratic past 3000 RPM, I would replace the cable as the first step. Sometimes the cable will "wind up" and result in a pulsing condition.

For suppliers of cable I would go to Healey Surgeons in Md. or West Valley Instruments in LA. Peter.

Your spring on your mechanical tach may be weak. You may be able to borrow a good one from someone for comparison, or if you have a drill that you know the speed of. I don't know any instrument repair companies in Europe.

Hre said thre engine goes on "over-rev". I guess I read too much into his post thinking that the engine rpm's were actually varying.

Devi dare più fatti:

This is an Austin Healey 100/6 BN4 from February 1959 with a 6-cylinder 2639cc engine. Above 3000 rpm the engine starts to howl and gives the feeling that it is at the limit. The other instruments are not altered .The engine runs round and has no hesitation whatsoever, it does not consume oil, but I repeat beyond 3K rpm it seems at the maximum allowed rpm also for the noise it emits. I don't think the tachometer is elettronic, indeed i think not. Thank you
