Scuttle Vent

Members, As a "newbie" to the forum, I thought I'd make my first post an easy one. I own a 1966 TR4A. The scuttle vent lid operates and has what seems to be all parts in place, (Lid, seal, spring & operating rod) It closes using the cockpit lever just fine, however when I try to open it from inside, just the trailing edge of the lid lifts. It is as though the fulcrum of the hinge is missing. Can anyone describe to me how this part is supposed to attach so that it works properly?

I would take a look at the bellcrank that the knob is attached to, part #19 in this drawing...

I think the fulcrum you're looking for is the hole in the apex of that piece... might be attached with a pin & spring nut or a screw & nut. Sorry, away from home for a few days so I can't look at the part.

I've a TR3, and I would imagine the vent operation is similar. The vent cover is spring loaded, and it sounds like the spring is either missing, or has slipped from its proper location. If I remember correctly, when the vent lid is in the open position, you can access the mechanism to remove it. If you have a Moss catalog, there's a fair exploded view of the assembly that might help you figure it out. And I'm sure someone else will be along to offer more info.

My TR4 did the same thing many years ago, I assume the 4A is similar, could be wrong though. The small hinge plate that mounts on the scuttle panel is very thin and narrow. Mine cracked allowing the hinge on the actuating rod side to go upwards when I tried to open the vent. I gas welded it and have had no more trouble with it. If you need to remove the vent; disengage the springs on the vent panel and the retainer clip from the rod and disengage the rod. Behind the rubber seal are three bolts, remove these and the assembly comes off.

The scuttle vent is used on TRs from the TR4 through the early TR6s. I have had two vents break at the welds on the hinge. A replacememt vent lid is available from the major parts places. It helps if you have small hands for removing and replacing the vent, and don't let the spring nut that keeps the control rod attached to the lid fly off. You can spend some quality time looking for it.

Thank you all for your response. I think I now have the solution. Looks like one of the previous owners must have removed the broken part of the hinge (hopefully with the intention of welding it) but never got around to fixing/replacing. As such, I see the holes for the bolts to secure the lower portion of the hinge but no remains. I'll look for the replacement part.

Hi, I had the spring in my scuttle vent (on a '62 TR4) powdercoated, along with a batch of other things. It really cleaned up well and looks great. Now, it might outlast the rest of the body!
