Removing BJ8 Hub Bearings

I decided to replace the front hub bearings on my BJ8 as I could feel a little play in them, and once stripped it seems sensible to use new parts. Problem is I cannot manage to extract the outer shell of either inner or outer race.

Any tips? The factory manual refers to a special extractor which I assume must expand behind the very small shoulder of outer race that is exposed ??

In practise I don't think there is any problem with the existing bearings having closely examined them, and removing the play with correct shimming (what a palaver!) but it would be nice to know how others have managed.

If you look down the throat of the cleaned hub you will see small indentations where a brass rod can be placed and hammered on to remove the bearing. You need to alternate between the two indentations. But first I would try shimming to see if you can use the existing bearings. Make sure they feel smooth when turned as a unit.
