Great picture. Interesting to see racing with wire wheels too.

My father-in-law raced our GT6 on wires as late as about 1970. In hindsight even he admits that racing on wires was nuts.

Thanks for the link Nial!

Many cars were raced on wire wheels back in the day. Even the TRS Cars used wires at Le Mans. I recall reading somewhere that wire wheels were developed to provide cooling to the brakes and lighter unsprung weight. So not unusual then but today even the vintage racers use alloy wheels. You'll see some wires but not the fast guys.

The TRs that raced with wire wheels had better handling than other TRs with steel wheels because of the way that the wires flexed through the curves of the race track.

Excellent tips by Kas. Plug checks, ignition timing, checking valve clearances, and tire pressures are all big ones.

Just following that checklist alone religiously, will put you ahead of a lot of vintage racers.

Also, there is a good reason (performance) wire wheels haven't been used in racing for nearly 50 years now.
