Looking for tips: BJ8 roll up windows

I'm about to start disassembling the doors on my BJ8 to try to correct/improve the window roll-up functionality. Before I have a big mess on my hands, I was wondering if there are any major pitfalls of which I need to be wary. I don't want to create new problems! Thanks!

I wouldn't mess with them too much just try to clean them up and put some grease in the sprocket ,if you break anything your going to regret it

Clean the winder mechanism and re lube it . Also make sure the plastic guide pieces on the window edges are all there and not broken/worn out .

I took it all apart, replaced the plastic pieces which had disappeared, lubed and painted. Windows work but they are stiff to roll up and down.

Its a sports car how many times do you drive with the window up I wouldn't mess with it anymore the window frame can't be sourced if you break it

Not strictly true, they may not be available on your side of the pond but they can be obtained from AH Spares in England.

Just take it easy, you need to remove the chrome trim on the top of the door and then remove the arm rest/cushion on the inside of the door, remove the inner and outer clip on rubber / brush sections. Remove the door handle and window handle - the door card needs to be gently pushed in to reveal the hidden pin on each winder/lever, then remove the screws holding the door card. The quarter light can be removed and the glass will be free to lift out. The nylon sliders can then be got at if they need to be replaced, from memory the glass and the frame will need to be parted to get at two of them. I tried new rubber to replace the glass into the frame but failed so resorted to silicone in the end - much easier but can be a bit messy if you over do the silicone - works a treat and can be cut out with a thin blade if it ever needs removing in the future.

While you have it open, make sure you take the broken window guide pieces and any other debris out of the bottom of the door. We cured a couple of miscellaneous rattles that way on our car. Other than that just take it slow and easy as noted above. It's not hard to do and getting the guides back on mine helped with operation and with some rattling.

I spent many hours aligning the window frame to reduce binding. You can make it better, but it seems impossible to make it good.

When I did mine a few weeks ago I noticed that the spot where the windows bind up is right at the level of the top of the door. It appears that during manufacture to get the vent window chrome to align with the windshield frame, they just bent/bowed it inwards. This caused the channel to close slightly right at the top of the door, and if you look closely you can probably see where the channel is slightly smaller. After I had everything aligned, I used a piece of wood to drive through the channel to re-enlarge it so to minimize the binding at that one spot. Perhaps something similar will work for you.

I just did mine a few months ago. What I learned: The replacement guides are slightly larger than needed to be. I ended up taking a large emory board (toe nail file) and filing them down to make a good fit. I filed a little at a time and even slightly rounded the edges. I sprayed clear silicone lube in the tracks and got them to slide up and down fairly good without binding. Be sure that they have been installed correctly(they need to be a little loose in the window frame and not glued tight!!!) if you take them to a glass shop to be done. I had two trips to the shop that I used. What was obviously not correct to me went unoticed by them. Take pics before you take it to a shop first.

Thanks everyone for the tips! I got stalled on a few other projects but I'm knee deep into this now. One thing that seems curious to me is that the rear channel of the roll up window seems to be curved at an arc and the glass is nearly flat. I'd hate to do all this and bind up or break the glass. Is this normal? I have hopefully attached a photo looking down the window channel from the top.
