TR6 looking for info on doing a T5 swap

I'm happy to re-invent the wheel if I -have- to, but I'd be just as happy to follow in a successful swap's footsteps

I'm planning to use a TR3 bell housing, so I guess I need to know where to chop it and how best to align the gearbox. Also, what clutch arrangement did you use?

Thanks in advance!

(if I DO end up having to work it all out for myself, I'll post what I did!)

It has been done, but is a lot of tedious work, and the gear lever will not be in the correct position, although a new gear lever can be custom made.
I have both a T5 and a toyota W58 gearbox at my disposal. Have opted to use the W58 with a dedicated triumph to toyota bell housing as it is less work and looks "factory".

Looking at this website, I think the Isuzu Rodeo T5 should put the shifter in the right place. I plan to measure one sometime soon, and will report back

I helped a guy install one of Goeff Duponts T5 transmissions in a TR6 nearly 20 years ago.
That person and Goeff are out of the TR6 hobby as of now, but I did find this about another installation:

You are exactly correct!
I also have the Toyota W58 in my TR6. I got a new bell housing that mates to the Toyota transmission on one end and the Triumph on the other. This setup is virtually plug and play. Shifter lines up perfectly. No cutting, no welding. It’s looks stock and I love the 5-speed.
Oh, yeah, I also have the hydraulic throw out bearing which is also a plus to me.

Hi - I am looking at doing the same conversion to my '76 TR6. Where did you get the bell housing for the conversion?

Try "Dellow Comversions" Australia, that's where my Toyota W58 bell housing was made...Their bell housing is made to accept the W58 style mechanical clutch operation...They can supply the spigot bush, dedicated throwout bearing etc.
As for shifter lever position, there are alternative locations available.
[They may also be able to make a bell housing for the T5].

If you are quite mad, I can sell rough cast bellhousings(heat treated) for 200$ + shipping. Machine work is hard
to farm out, my W58 kit comes finished and IS made here in the USA.

Good to know. I have a machining source, but it sounds like a lot of work. Do you have machining specs, you would be willing to share? Also, what is cost for your W58 kit?

My machine shop has the program on their machine (proprietary ), I get them done as ordered due to the expense.
The complete kit is 2000$ and 70$ shipping. If you find a W58 ,it MUST be from a 82-85 Supra or it will NOT fit a tr6.
The shifter tower on other W58's available precludes their use(TR6), but can work in the Tr3/4

Thanks for response. Your price is good. Is there anything else I would need besides the transmission? Now I need to find a transmission. Noted it must be from a 82-85 Supra. I heard they are hard to find.

Are you referring to the availability of shifter positions on the standard W57 & W58, or the later Supra's using the R154 version with the extended shifter of the W58?

Buying a secondhand Supra gearbox can be problematic....Unless it has been tested/examined by a professional, then allow for the cost of reconditioning...Parts are not readily available, but are obtainable, and there are internal differences within depending on the model.
If you decide to go down the Toyota path, I suggest source the gearbox first before deciding on the bell housing path, together with the decision as to go hydraulic or mechanical throw out bearing.
