Installed new timeing chain and gears, did not install tensioner.

Take it apart and install?? Or the heck with it?

I'd be concerned about possibly jumping teeth, and since the camshaft timing will be shifted with the extra slack in the chain, I would put it in. I bet it would be very noisy without it too. How loose was it without it?

Is not loose at all, is all new. Think long ago we could not get these so ignored them on the Bugeye.

Comments?

I have no clue how I did this, never even thought of it. Is it going to effect anything you supose in 10,000 miles?

Jack, you've gone through all this effort to make Agatha nice. You'll always know that you didn't fix this. Save yourself the agony and do it the right way. Besides, you've been saying that you don't have much to do while waiting for the shell to come back. Now you've got a project. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Dave, the 948 / 1098 have two flat rubber "O" rings that fit over a shoulder on the front and rear of the cam gear. The outer edges of the links ride on these rubber cushions. Theoretically, the natural elasticity of the rubber, and centrifugal force combine to keep the chain somewhat tight.
Heavy sarcasm on the "theoretically", although I just went out and looked at a well used 948, and the T/C is surprisingly tight.

Seems we never used them way back when, could not get them. Suspose they are really necessary in my case??

Interesting....That's my new thing for today /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

I know when my chain tensioner disintegrated it sounded like I was running a gear drive.
It made a rather peculiar whining sound.
(It was loose and slapping)

Jack, I also remember running without them, but I remember changing a few chains, too. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nonono.gif
It's your call, but I bet you won't sleep right until you install the little buggers. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I usually swap over to the dual row chain setup anyway, and it then becomes a "non-issue". Don't you have everything to do that anyway?

Noop, decided the chain and the gears were worn, In addition they were for a 1275 so did not fit. I went with new chain and gears.

You know I went 15 years on the same chain without them. Never a prob and I did rebuild the engine 3 times. Just did not know any better. Oh yea, that little engine would turn 7300 before it quit breathing.
