Hail Mary on 3rd gear syncro

Hi guys - first of all happy 4th guys!

The Bugeye is running/turning/stopping well (OK-OK, well enough) to be major fun. There is only one somewhat major bummer - my 3rd gear syncro seems to be gone. I can get 1st and 2nd cleanly, and 4th when I double clutch but for the life of me I cannot get into 3rd without a crunch.

Seeing that I can get into all the other gears cleanly I'm assuming that 3rd gear is just toast but before I get my head around pulling everything out I was wondering if there is anything else I should be thinking of trying first.

Any different gear oil might help? Burning incense? Sacrifice a goat?

Hmmm, not sure about the goat. Pull it all.

I did everything I could before I concluded that the syncro in third gear was gone. I changed the oil, bled the clutch and even replaced the hose connected to the slave and still I had a grinding noise in third gear. I have a replacement gearbox that I will be putting in and will probably look at rebuilding the old one. It has only 19,000 miles on it and I expect either the person rested their hand on the gearstick or was rough changing gear.
I put it off for some time by ginergly changing from 2nd to third and downshifting from 4th to 2nd, but its time to get to work.

Don't sacrifice the goat. Makes a mess of you front grillework, and you can lose control if you're going fast.

Plan sounds good. Yes, the world is full of people who are very adept at trashing transmissions. It will be interesting to open it up and do an autopsy. And, if you have a good replacement, there's nothing to lose.
