Fit of extension panel to gearbox cover & bulkhead

Hey all,
Had to purchase a new extension panel - piece that attaches
to the gearbox cover between it and the main bulkhead -
for my BN6. Original one was lost during the restoration
by the previous owner and I'm still completing the project.
I got this one from AH Spares and most of their sheet metal
I have used over the past few years has fit well. This one
will have to have some cutting done but main question I have
is - should there be a gap at the top of the extension panel
as it is sitting up against the bulkhead ? This gap is about
1/2 inch and if I modify it to rest flush then I pull away
from the gearbox cover. Hope I'm describing it so it makes
sense. Seems like the one I had on a BN1 and had not been
fiddled with also had a gap there.
Thanks,
Mike

If I recall the early model 3000 didn't have a gasket there and relied on a carpet seal. Also don't forget to cut a piece of "everflex" on the upper lip so that when the carpet in installed you should see the black everflex lip. Now, since I said that I remember I did put a length of sealing tape (It's whats used to seal Pickup bed toppers to the pickup rear frame, you can buy it at Home Depot etc.) on the back side of the wings that wrap around the bulkhead.
Hope this helps....

Every hole, gap, crack you close proper, helps to keeps you inside temperature down. I don’t care if this is original or not, as long I am comfortable.

I have a 3000 BN7 and don't know if it is the same as BN6. My "extension" cover fits flush with the bulkhead and has a rubber seal riveted on the bottom half circle that rests on the transmission bell housing. The transmission cover rests up against the bulkhead extension cover with the carpet forming the seal. The transmission tunnel cover has a lip with a vinyl cover.

Here is a picture of the opening without the extension panel. The panel attaches to this surface. The bottom of the panel has the seal that rests on the bellhousing. If your structure is different, please wait for info from a BN6 owner.

Hey all,
Thanks for the help and advice. I think the major part of my problem is the
extension piece I got from AH Spares. It is not flat on the portion that would
attach to the bulkhead like in Tim's picture but rather has a lip that was
made by a 90 degree bend on the left and right edge. Tim if you might be
able to post a picture of your extension piece would be great. Looks like
I might have to get my sheet metal hammer out and do some modifying !!!!
Thanks,
Mike

this is the panel from the back side, I don't have a front side picture

By the way, I got a new seal from British Car Specialists (Nock family).
