On my way up to a job about 20 miles north today and I notice my temp doing a slow creep north as well. It usually does this until the thermostat pops for the first time and then settles down to normal. This time, however it just kept going until it became apparent it wasn't going to go back down. I called my wife (thank God for cell phones) to bring a backup vehicle and pulled into the nearest driveway and as I did the engine was noticably straining and finally quit just as I coasted to a stop off the highway. I tried to start it and the starter could just barely turn it over, closest thing to a seized engine that I've ever experienced.
Wife picks me up, I get to the job and return to the car about 3 hours later and it starts right up with no bad sounds or anything else out of the ordinary. However, I didn't delude myself into thinking it would get me home without problems so it got a free ride home on a flatbed.
So now I've got to find out the reason for the overheating and if there's any significant damage to the engine. Even though it's running now I can't believe a near seize can be anything but bad. Next week I'll do a complete physical on the thing and that will tell me what I need to do or not do.
Actually, I'm not all that bummed by this turn of events since I've got visions of new hi compression pistons, hot cam and some port work on the heads. In a way, I almost wish the thing had done a spectacular blow and saved me the indecison. Stay tuned for the rest of the story.
