Differential fluid/oil

We're leaving tomorrow for Memphis and the car show. Dahubby changed the oil last night (I didn't want to mess up my nails) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif

Tonight I checked the air in the tires (fine) and the fluids. The differential oil was empty. Not low, empty. Last time I checked it was before we went to Michigan, mid August. So I couldn't find any and there was some that dahubby uses on his bass boat...same same? Or is he going to yell when he gets home?

And...how the bloody L do you check your transmission fluid without a lift???

If the differential was indeed that low, maybe you should find out where it went!

I have no idea what he uses in the boat. YOU should use a SAE 80W-90 GL5 rated gear oil in the axle.

You can check the transmission without a lift if you have VERY long arms.

You will need to have the car so you can go under it and keeping it level. There is a plug (fill/check) on the right side of the trans. How did you check your differential oil if you didn't go under the car, also if it was empty I would think you would see where it had leaked.

Trans oil dip stick is under the rug on the passenger side of the floor tunnel. There is a rubber plug there and you remove it--the dip stick is right there. Use the same oil you use in the motor. My manuals say not to use gear oil on MGs. There are two lines on the dip stick and the oil level should be between them.

I couldn't reach it to check the tranny fluid. The only markings on the cardboard (which was put down 'new' a couple weeks ago) was the normal few drips of oil. I'm going to have dahubby take it uptown in the morning and talk a guy we know into putting it on his lift.


Oooh, I could have used the new jack stands I bet.

The LBC rule of thumb is a lot like the old Harleys.
If it's not leaking, it's out of oil.
The tranny access plug in a terrible spot behind the radio on the pass side top of the tunnel.
Might want to pull the rear brake drums to make sure the axle seals aren't leaking.

...and what everyone said, the transmission oil (20w50 engine oil) can be easily checked anywhere anytime by reaching behind the radio and pulling the dipstick. I'll just add that if you can't get a grip on the dipstick just reach under the car and feel around for it and push up from the side - it shouldn't be difficult once you find just where it is.
