TR2/3/3A Datsun 240Z Drums on a TR3A

I read an artical on the internet about a person that put Datsun 240Z finned rear drums on a 59 TR3A... Anyone ever tried this? I getting ready for a brake-over on my TR3A with Toyota's on the front and Aflin on the rear with 3/4 cylinders.

What do you think....

Not a bad way to a: replace bad drums and b: "upgrade" a wee bit for not a lot of money (certainly cheaper than original or reproduction true AlFin drums). My understanding is that the center hold usually has to be enlarged a bit...and you have to drill and counterbore two holes IF you want to use the redundant hold-down screws. There may also have to be some "relieving" done on the back of the drum? Hopefully that article you found covered all this.

At one time I recall hearing of some outfit that actually "prepped" 240Z drums specifically for this application, but I've no idea who that is/was at the moment.

I put 240Z drums on my old racecar. I bought two used drums. Three things need to be done:

1. Enlarge the center hole.

2. Enlarge the lug holes.

3. Cut the lip around the circumference away. you actually have to "indent" the aluminum between the steel liner and fins to clear the lip on the backing plate.

I found that paying a machinist to do all this was more expensive than buying a pre-machined set of drums, so I bought a set already modified. I got them from a big online parts supplier whose name I forget. I gave the receipt to the new owner, so I can't look at it. You can probably Google it. You have to search the parts inventory for TR6, not TR3, because they don't list TR3.

They fit fine and looked cool.

Brembo supplies them pre-modified (with the brake backing plate recess machined) but I don't have the part number either. Just saw a discussion this week on this on one of the online forums that listed the part number for the TR6. Check team.net or kaskastner forums. Not available for very early 10" drums (like mine) but you are post TS60000 so you should be all set.

Thanks for the input guys...I found a place that will supply them, machined and ready to install. $200.00 for the pair delivered.

For those interested or for future reference..

FWIW, Triumph went back from 10 inch to 9 inch at TS 56377...

Kevin,

I wasn't trying to set the changeover point to 9" just noting that Roy is good to go since he has a later 3A.

Thanks for the clarification.

BTW my '58 is TS29694L and has 10".

Typo on that commision number???

If you meant TS65001, then the rear axle was either changed, or a different body was put on an earlier chassis. I'm putting a TS74XXX body on my TS23XXX chassis, so it will wind up with 10" rear brakes. I'm not into originality. There are other guys out there that are, so there will always be enough correct examples around. My problem is keeping track of what part of the car I'm buying parts for. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wall.gif
