brake light/signal linght problem

Country flag
Offline
I need to find a common denominator with the lights.
#1 brake lights stopped operating.
#2 left side directional signals, front and back, stopped working.
#3 trafficator will not stay in ON position when turned to left and gives no ticking sound as the right does.

My guess is the trafficator needs adjusting to come in contact with the points to indicate the left direction. How could this impact the brake lights?

All fuses are fine and I think every thing is well grounded (I will check again). Before starting on a 550 mile trip last weekend all systems were a "go". I will check the brake switch as a separate cause but this is too much of a coincidence for a car that has always been perfect.

Any thoughts?

TH, I've heard rumors that someone owns a perfect Healey...so it's you my friend

Brake lights, check the switch. They have been known to stop working. Some, me included, replaced with it with a mechanical. One less thing to worry about.

Directional clicking sound would be from the flasher unit. I'd check those wires first.

I've had my trafficator out many times. You can remove it right at the steering wheel, without having to pull the complete wire harness up through the stator tube. It takes about 10 minutes. There is no adjustment in the trafficator. It either makes contact or it doesn't. If it's staying in the locked position, then it should be making contact. A brass clip will slide over the brass bolt head. The brass head my have worn down, but you should have had some sort of heads up with that, works, doesn't work sometimes.

You might check the flasher relay. I found that was one of the reasons my directional didn't work consistantly.

Good luck,
Roger

Roger, it only ticks when right side is turned. Won't stay on the left side and doesn't tick. I think the alignment shifted and there is no contact with the points to the left. I've had the trafficator out half a dozen times in the past 10 years just not in the past 5 or 6. Its no sweet. I'm just looking for a connection between it and the brakes. I will be checking the brake switch continuity. May be a ground problem. But they do light with the head lamps as they are suppose to.
By the way, all Healeys are perfect. Ask any one who doesn't own one as you drive by them.

Rich, if the tab will not stay in position when pushed to the left, then the problem may be in the trafficator. The V-section that the roller clicks in and out of, may have the edges worn, thereby not letting it click into position. You can build it back up with JB weld, then sand into shape or send it out for repair by having that plate replaced.

Have you checked the flasher relay?

Good luck,
Roger
