68 MGB Clutch up-date

Pulled the engine out this afternoon and here is what I found. Fair to say the TOB is toast. I have a new one ready to go in after I clean all the remants of the old one out of the bellhousing.

Re: 68 MGB Clutch up-date

Here's my next dilema:
On the left is the pressure plate that came out, on the right is the new one from Moss. Which one is the correct one? Picture is of the outside.

Re: 68 MGB Clutch up-date

Peter, The new one looks like the ones I have been having trouble with. The ones I purchased were in a QH box and are stamped Borg and Beck! They work BUT the pedel is right at the top and on some if you just barely touch the pedel (release bearing just in contact with the pressure plate)you may feel your foot vibrate slighty. I hope you have a different brand clutch than what I have had issues with. There was Zero clutch jutter and appeared to work fine other than where it engages. I would be interested in the brand Moss sold and how it feels to you. The friction material on later issue clutchs are different than old style and what you have appears correct. Check the clutch disc on the trans. input shaft. Several years ago there was a run of discs that were very tight on the shaft. Just be sure yours will slide on before you assemble the clutch onto the engine. Good luck with the project. Bob

Re: 68 MGB Clutch up-date

Bob, my parts came in American Products ("ap" is what the 'logo' looks like) boxes. And I see the same "ap" symbol is stamped in the old clutch disc. Are there any reasons I shouldn't reuse the old clutch disc? It doesn't appear damaged in any way, at least to my eyes. The old disc looks to have more "meat" on it than the new one. The old and new pressure plates are SO different in appearance and construction. Those things combined with the feedback on the various boards about problems people are having make me really concerned. I don't want to be back in there 3 months from now. But things will be MUCH cleaner and the weather will be cooler! LoL

Re: 68 MGB Clutch up-date

I would use the new disc. The friction material is fine even though it is a bit narrower. I have not had a issue with that. Please post the clutch feel and where it grabs when releasing the pedel. Or hit me with a PM. That great info to share. Bob
