General Tech Is there a quiet electric fuel pump

I picked up a pair of used webers and carter rotary vane fuel pump. Rebuilt and installed, love the setup, but pump is loud. I have isolated it as best I can but still too noisy. Is there a quieter pump out there that will work?

You can hear it with the engine not running, but I don't think it is too loud. There are some rubber isolation mounts you can use with it.

Did you set up the Carter pump with a return line to the tank? Not sure that it would help with noise, but I have heard that the rotary pumps do not like having their output shut off (by the float valve) and need to have some flow all the time.

When I installed one of the rectangular Facet pumps (which are also pretty loud) in my Stag, I used a double isolation mount, which worked out pretty good. Rubber mounts from the pump to a separate plate, then rubber between the plate & body. I can just hear the pump from inside the car with the engine idling, but not once I get moving (and I don't usually notice it at all).

Of course you could always convert back to an original type mechanical pump. They're quiet

The rotary vane Carter is loud enough that I can still hear it at idle. It also seems to draw a lot of amps. However, electric is recommended for the Weber Carbs. My hope is to find something a little better.

I liked the Carter pump for the brief time I had one on our GT6. However, it failed pretty much for the reason that Randall mentioned. The fuel filter plugged and the pump needs moving fuel to carry away the heat. The vane assembly is plastic and it basically melted into a non-functional lump. That has been the only time I had to use AAA with the GT6 (so far!)

I have used the Facet bricks and the Facet round top pumps like Darrell provided the link for. I think the round top pump is a bit quieter than the brick but it is larger. I was fortunate to find a guy selling NOS pumps and picked one up for about 1/2 the price shown in the Aircraft Spruce link.

If you can hear the pump, you need a more open muffler! These are sports cars, I never hear the pump. Jerry

Thanks Jerry but I'm already there with a SS Dual Sport System. Also bored, milled head, cam, tuned distributor. The only thing this car isn't is quiet.

I had a E pump i bought for my TR250 from Car Quest. Our local TR mechanic recommended it to me. My concern was the noise too, however assured me it was very quiet. He said he puts them in a lot of MGBs because it looks OE and has that light tick sound to it. The cost was reasonable too. It is off the car now and I'll look for it and get the numbers and pic of it.

As I promised last week this is the pump I used for a couple of years. I recently took it off because I wasn't getting fuel to the carbs and bought a mechanical pump then discovered my tank was plugged. I will put it back on soon.

I have a 1997 chris craft boat that has a carburator, and it has a carter electric fuel pump like the one in the link below, It is very quiet, low pressure, and I thought about putting one in my TR6 to replace the noisy electic one I have now, its a little pricy but its for a boat so go figure. it should be explosion proof too!

I'm not certain which one you mean, but I believe 18-7326 (the one described as "low pressure") is actually a 7 psi pump, not 2.5. "low pressure" is relative.

Of course I could be mistaken, my point is just to check out the exact specification, not just "low pressure". I've never heard of a Carter carb that only took 2.5 psi.

This one I listed is 2.5 to 4 PSI. perfict pressures. like I said I ran it for years on my 250 with tri carb set up. Seems to me I paid in the $40 doaller range back in 08.
