Brake master cylinder woes

I'm in the process of rebuilding the brake and clutch hydraulics on my '67 Healey 3000. The BJ8's all had servo assist, as I understand it, and the earlier cars had servo as an option. The brake m.c. for non-servo cars is shorter, and is in fact the same as the clutch m.c. for all 3000's. To make a long story short, I ordered a new brake m.c. from Moss, and they sent the wrong part twice (same as the clutch m.c., too short), although stock numbers appeared to be correct. Victoria British sent me a brake m.c. which is closer to the correct size of the installed part, but the inlet and exit lines do not match up, and since the lines are too short would require installing and bending new lines. It seems to me that I out to be able to buy a replacement part which is an exact fit. Does anyone have any suggestions for other sources of supply which they have found to be reliable and knowledgeable ?

Are you sure you need a new mc. Even though the books say don't mess with the inside surface, I blasted mine with glass bead media and have been using them for quite a while. You can always send it to White Post Restorations or Apple Hydrualics to have it re-sleeved with brass.

If the unit is not in too bad a shape I would attempt to rebuild as noted in previous post. Tried White Post on clutch and brake masters on my '73 B. WP shipped back a dented clutch master, the one I sent was the original on the car and was not dented. Now at 1 to 2 years the brake master is peeing on my feet. I had hoped to avoid having to pull the *&^%&^ thing out over and over.Now with over $400 spent not so sure it was worth it. There is a life time warranty but..........

I also had a small problem with White Post, so maybe you should try Apple H. with a note saying you want the original returned.

I have no experience with White Post or Apple....

but about 6 months ago, on this forum, there was a thread where folks were saying how unhappy they were with Apple Hydraulics.

At the time I was considering having my master cylinder re-built, so instead of sending it out, I did it myself, using an "unapproved method" (that I learned from my Dad).

I attached a piece of Scotch-Brite pad to a wooden dowel, soaked it in brake fluid and used as a "hone" (with an electric hand drill). One area had a bit of rust, so I added a bit of toothpaste as a mild abrasive.....cleaned out nicely! Flushed out everything and added a new seal (less than $10 at Moss)....so far, no leaks!
