TR2/3/3A TR3 Clutch Release bearing

I read somewhere that the clutch release bearing should spin freely to check for any hang-ups and wear. I just got a new one from one of the big three and it will bearly move inside itshelf. Is something wrong or is it suppose to be that way because it's new? Also how much grease should I use on the clutch release bearing sleeve?

I bought a NOS one on eBay which was in the same condition: full of grease and stiff, though smooth, to turn.
Due to breaking my first gear, I got the opportunity to examine it after 2500 miles in use. It spins freely now!
Yours is probably just fine.

A "thin smear" should be plenty of grease where the sleeve rides on the transmission front cover.

It's much less important on the TR2-4 than on the later TRs, because the TOB does not turn all the time. The later cars rely on a light spring to be enough to make the bearing spin, and have serious problems when it doesn't. But the TR2-4 system pulls the bearing back slightly, so it's OK if it's a little stiff.

Personally, I don't use "grease" on that surface at all. Grease is sticky, which is just asking for dirt and clutch material to accumulate and cause problems. Instead, I've been using "dry moly" spray for many years, and it seems to work well. Eg, https://www.drillspot.com/products/306416/Crc_Industries_03084_Dry_Moly_Lube
