What oil are you using?

....and what interval do you change it at?

I'm running regular (non-synthetic) 10W-30 (Valvoline or Castrol) in everything....with oil changes (and filter) every 5000 miles or 6 months, which ever comes first.

I would suggest Castrol 20/50 and Fram filters-my family has used that combo for a few generations

and despite rumors/actual events regarding Fram filters, we have never had a problem-Pintos to Porsches...Jaguars to jalopies! A good additive is always a plus-my personal favorite is ER-Energy Release. I personally believe that 5,000 miles/6mos is a little long to wait for an oil change. I thought the recommended was around 3 mos/3,000 miles. I think that one can never 'overchange' oil-that's kind of like having too much water on a nuclear reactor....and I am rather anal about clean-under the hood and outside the hood....so on my GMC 2500 and the V12 Jag and the Cadi 472/500's...all my babies get 1000 to 1500 miles or eight weeks...adjusted for new acquisitions to clean up very dirty cars....Just my opinion...please take it with a grain of silt (out of the engine)!

I'm running Castrol GTX 20/50 in the MGB (engine, and transmission), mostly because it was recommended by several people for the transmission's wet-clutch so I bought a case, with Purolator filter. Otherwise I generally use Valvoline 5/30 in the Saturn (with Bosch filters now).

The Saturn gets changed when I get to it, usually around 4000 miles. The MGB gets changed at least twice a year no matter what, and has been at around 2000 miles between changes minimum.

My VW 1600 gets changed several times a year with 40W (straight weight) once the temperatures get in the 80s, 30W for winters (Florida remember). Eventually I'm going to put a Hobbs meter on the VW and change it around 30-hours, but right now it's averaging 1000-1500 miles between changes.

The Lycoming O235 gets 25-30 hour changes with Aeroshell-100 and Champion filters and a can of Avblend (600 hours on it with straight 72# cylinders), and I'm happy to say I've managed to hardly ever spill a drop

I like to use Mobil 10/30W with Fram HD filters. It has been a good combo with my '77 B with 72K. I do change it every 3K. I don't think you can do it too often, but I think you shouldn't throw your money away either. I check the oil, not only for level, every time I get gas but for clarity as well. If it is getting dirty before 3K it gets changed.

If your serious about looking after your engine, then FULLY SYNTHETIC is the only one to go for. I use Mobil 1 in my current Lotus and have done in most of my cars before it. It costs a bit more but in the long run is well worth it.

I've used Valvoline 20-50 "Racing" oil in a TR6 for 50k, and a Jensen-Healey for 100+k miles. Now using it in my Marcos with Ford Essex V6. Oil pressure remains constant over a 3-4000 mile interval and is 5-10 lbs higher than with regular Valoline or Castrol, etc.

Also maintains oil pressure in extremely hot situations, especially in the Jensen-Healey which showed a noticeable decline in pressure the hotter it got when using regular 20-50.

I am using Mobil 1, and have been happy with it. But I am considering Amsoil. Anyone have any experience with it. It says that it was the first fully synthetic.

I run Mobil 1 5W-30 in both an Explorer 4.0L SOHC V-6) and an F-150 (4.6L V-8). Typically use Fram or Motorcraft (Ford) filters. Change interval is about 5K miles. I have used Mobil 1 for about 20 years in a variety of high mileage cars and have been very pleased with it.

The TR-6 ran Castrol 20W-50 until recently. I found a Quaker State synthetic 20W-50 that I am trying since the car gets so few miles. The change interval is 6 months. I had a spin-on adapter but the darn thing blew out the block to adapter gasket and that was the end of that. I am back to stock oil filters now.

I ran across an interesting thread a while ago on another forum regarding synthetic oil:

i use castrol 20-50 and stp filters in my british cars. i change the oil in my cars every 2500 miles religiously. in the sovereign i use valvoline type fa in the tranny which is as close as you can get to the original oil which was type "G", that is not around anymore. the audi uses walmart brand 10-30 with a fram filter.
(its my wifes car).

I'm a believer. I have used synthetic on the motor home and my 85 ford 150 as they work harder and the mileage is getting up. Never could say if it was better with the poor gauges. Changed to Mobil 15/50 on the 62 alpine . The V6 one with 130000 miles. Better oil pressure at start. Drove 20 miles on the highway to make sure it was warm. Still better oil pressure. I did however leave the hot oil draining when the filter I thought I had was the wrong one and had to get one first thing in the morning. Can't say if this helped but just maybe.
