clutch slave cylinder

Hello everyone,I just replaced the slave cylinder on my BJ7.The thing that bothers me is the bleeder is on bottom and the hose comes in the top.If I reverse this,it doesn't look like the plunger will match up to the clutch lever.I have always thought the bleeder must be high so air will bleed off.I thought I'd ask before I start pouring in brake fluid.Can any one tell me if their bleeder is on top or bottom. The bleed screw is on the top in my BJ8. I believe yours should be too. The bleed screw is not in the best place to get a wrench and hose attached at the same time. It has always been a messy job bleeding the slave unless I remove the transmission cover. I use a stubby style wrench in place of a flare wrench or the modified box wrench suggested by Norm Nock.

My recollection is that the ports for the hose and bleed screw are interchangeable. Did they simply get swapped during the last rebuild?

Hello Ben, on my BJ7 the bleed screw is at the top. It is just about impossible to get a wrench on it. So, I just unbolted it from the bell housing, made a bracket out of two pieces of steel plate, and two long bolts, then I put a shallow 3/8th drive socket into the bore against the piston, used the plates and two bolts to hold the socket from being driven out upon pressure, had my understudy (wife) apply slight pressure to the clutch pedal while i openned and closed the bleeder as required from under the car with the slave held in my hand. After a full bleed and the piston was out against the socket/bracket I just bolted it back into place. Hopes this helps.

The original parts list shows the bleeder in the wrong port and the slave cyl. rotated 180 degrees. That would make mounting the cyl. impossible. Maybe the last owner did it for ease of bleeding.

My BT7 has the bleed screw on top of the slave cylinder. very hard to reach from under. But taking the trans tunnel off makes it very easy, while its off you can check fluid levels, electrical connections and perform other maintainance(like greasing the front universal).
