TR2/3/3A tr3 motor mount

So I got a SMALL case of the while I'm in there. I notice jacking up my motor to get the steering gearbox out that the motor mounts were pretty much jello. So I decided no better time than the present to replace them. When I took them out there were two slotted "shims" I guess that I would call them. The parts catalog says the are as needed. I guess that my question is what do they do and how many are needed?

I've never messed with them but I would think the idea is to use as needed to get the hand crank dog to line up with the hole in the radiator. But then I suppose the hole in the radiator has become an 'as needed' item itself.

Eric,
I'm in a "while I'm there" mode too and am thinking about the motor mounts. What should I watch out for when jacking up the front of the engine? Anything need to be disconnected, rear trans mount loosened?

In retrospect, I wish I had drained the cooling system and disconnected the upper radiator hose. It didn't break at the time, but was kind of strained by the time the engine was high enough to clear the stud on the mount, and it did fail a few days later.

I wish Randall would have said that some time ago as I snapped mine off just at the heater valve when I needed to rock the engine a bit to get out the passenger side mount. I cur off a 1/8 to a 1/4 inch of each of the bolts coming out of the mount. I had read that in a post from someone else. I had the engine jacked up all the way up and touching the accelerator linkage but the mounts were too tall and the bolts are considerably longer than they need to be. I also found lining up the hole in the mount with the frame a PITA but finally got the engine moved to the correct way and got them in. The motor is quite solid now and I'm glad that I did it.
