TR6 tr-6 noisy clutch?

Hello

Had my TR-6 out day, yay! Beautiful weekend in New England. I just got her back on the road after replacing the head gasket. Have been noticing that the clutch is noisy, there is squishy rattle type sound that happens when I push down the clutch. Seems to be no problem actually shifting, other than this noise, which is noticeable from under the hood.I couldn't isolate it. It happens when pushing down the clutch, even if I am in neutral. There is plenty of fluid. It is pretty loud, but intermittant, but seems to be happening more often than not lately. Not sure what else it could be, looking for some help..

Thanks in advance as always.

John,

Noises like this are never a welcome or comforting sound to hear, especially after you just finished correcting one pretty large issue.

It's hard to say from here, but it sounds like a T/O bearing may be starting to go, or the dreaded clutch fork issue, or perhaps a broken finger on the pressure plate or broken spring on the clutch disk. Not likely that disk spring as the noise would be more constant.

Can you get the car on a lift and have someone push the pedal up and down while you listen under the car to isolate the noise to the clutch housing area?

Unfortunately, from your description, there aren't too many options to consider.

Hi Paul-

Thanks for your reply. I am really bumming out right now. I'll see if I can isolate the sound..

Thanks again... John

Randall-

Hate to sound like a complete rookie, but can you tell me how would check the "end-float"??

Sorry and thanks.

Basically, you lever back against the front pulley on the engine, and note the relative position between the pulley and the timing pointer. Then you push in the clutch, which has the effect of moving the crankshaft forward; and note the relative position again. (You don't have to hold the clutch while looking, the crank will stay in place.) Although for a Spitfire, this web page shows the process

While it does take a dial indicator to be sure your end-float is within specs (under $25 at Enco), a serious problem will be visible to the naked eye.

John,

Bring it over to New Bedford for the Valley of Sin Run this Sat morning and we'll diagnose it for you. Meet us (The Cape Cod British Car Club) there at 9:30 and we'll check it out.
