Steering box oil seal question

The new oil seal I just received for the steering box has a stiff metal rim OD. There seems to be no way to compress it to fit into the steering box. Is this the right seal? Anyone come across a seal like this?

What does the correct seal look like?

Before you ask why doesn't he look at the old seal - there wasn't one! Not a trace of it. Me thinks this may have something to do with the leak.

Hard to believe your old seal is completely missing. If you have the arm off of the shaft & the old seal already out, the job is half way done.

The seal should look much like this one:
https://www.epm.com/oil_instal.htm

The open side & inner lip goes toward the steering box.

The OD of the seal will be several thousandths larger than the ID of the housing for a solid press/drive fit. It must be pressed or driven into the housing. The driver should be a tube that is just a bit smaller than the seal OD so that it bears on the seal's outer circumference only.

While driving it into place, the seal must be kept perfectly flat & square to it's bore.

The ID of the seal will form a spring loaded lip against the shaft.

Ah, Yoda the wise one. I'm putting my finger in there and feeling a groove into which I think an o-ring with spring style seal fits. In reality, it is the old seal still in there causing the gap. Nice catch.

Rubber forms an inverted V pressed in from the bottom, right? It was recommended to put two seals in. Any reason not to?

Thanks for the link.

Hard metal face toward the outside of the housing, down.

You can try two seals. You may find it hard enough to get one seal in though.

My housing had been mashed & flattened some on one side. Took some careful metal reforming before the seal could be replaced.
