Stainless Steel Bumpers

New stainless bumpers for $1,040 incl shipping. I'm not in the market (may be someday) but, I just read in my latest issue of Classic Motorsports how they paid $1,500 to have original bumpers for a Sunbeam Tiger re-chromed. Whew!

i have a set for an early tr6. perfect fit and they look great. cant tell they are not chrome.

The earlier ones that Harrington were advertizing quoted that the insides (back-sides) were painted black. Now they say they are painted but don't mention the colour.

Did you know that these bumpers are all made in their Vietnam factory ?

The front bumper on my 1958 TR3A came new in 1958 with the back-side chromed. But it was of inferior quality and most of the chrome plate peeled off after 10 years or so. In 1990, when I was finishing my restoration, I had the bumper (along with all the other bits) re-chromed and the quality is such that after another 20 years, the chrome on both outside and inside of my front bumper is still excellect.

I have the Harrington set for TR3. I am pleased. I think the metal is a slightly thinner gauge than original, but the originals really didn't provide much impact resistance, either. I am committed to not running into anything.

Hmmm, response appears fairly positive on SS bumpers. What have others seen as far as costs to rechrome front and rear bumpers? I had my valve cover rechromed a couple of years ago for $200 bucks. Nice job but definitely not show quality. You could still see evidence of original pitting.

My bumpers are not bad considering they are 44 years old. But, I would hate to pay $1,500 to have them chromed and not be PERFECT.

Hi Bob,

I have a friend in NE PA who does car restorations for a living. He`s tried virtually all the Chrome Platers out there & has settled in on "Pauls Chrome" in the Phil. PA area. He says they do the best job, have the highest cost & longest delivery. You may want to try them or at least get a quote.

I`m afraid I`m getting to that stage myself (Scary relative to $$$). Good thing there`s not too much chrome on the TR3.

Paul's Chrome quoted $1250 about 10 years ago for my TR6 bumpers. They do beautiful work. Their show chrome is a bit more. The Paul's I'm referring to is in Evans City, PA. About 30 miles north of Pittsburgh and 5 miles from my home.

After searching around for a reasonably local chrome shop for quite some time a shop was recommended to me which turned out to be 15 minutes away so I drove down and spoke with the owner of Super Chrome in Asbury NJ and had a nice discussion, he quoted me 8 hundred for the job including any minor repairs and that was based on a 1 week turnaround. They do a lot of specialized motorcycle chroming and generally you don't survive in that business without doing good work.

When someone asks me how to find a quality chrome shop I always tell them to go to a custom motorcycle shop and ask......as you said......if you mess up the Harley guy's bike, you won't last long........Hot Rod Shops are another good place to ask.

I met with the owner when I was there and he said things were a little slow (surprise, surprise)so I imagine that's affords a 1 week delivery !
