Sealing new outer panels on BN1

Hi
I am having new outer panels fitted to a BN1
The upper join is with the metal beading but should the lower join be just metal to metal or with some form of sealant?
Thanks
Ian

Hi Ian, No sealant is not required as well painted mating surfaces adds enough protection against rust and corrosion.---Keoke

great thanks
I went back to check and you can see light between the wings.
They tell me this is normal to let water drain out of the wheel well between the wings !
Surely this is just nonsense?

YEP-That is pure nonsense

Those panels have not been assembled correctly or were not properly fitted prior to attempting to paint.--Keoke

We have a 100 4 and when we replace the outer panels we will use a non setting sealer called DumDum. It is available from Frost in the UK. It is used by proffessional restorers and enables a water free joint to be made.

We have used in on a number of TR3s we have restored to good effect.

Tony,

Where do you use the DumDum (besides the front shroud to scuttle area)?

Any kind of sealant between shrouds and wings will result in water being trapped in there where it cannot escape and/or dry, and will cause eventual corrosion all over again.

Rich,
Are you saying to not even use the roll of black sealant I bought from AHSpares to seal between the shroud and wings on the top?

The sealant we use is to keep water out. It is elastic and will move with the bodywork and not crack.
You do not want water to be present where wings are fastened to the shrouds etc.
These areas are where muck and mud will congregate and soon start to rust.
