New Clunking Noise from the Passenger Side

Howdy all!

In the last couple of days, we've started hearing a clunking/thunking sound from the rear end, passenger side on our 250. It happens whenever we go over a bump. It's not just one clunk, but a whole series of them. Sounds like something has come loose and is knocking around a bit after each bump. We can also feel it.

Reminds me of when one of the rear shock absorbers worked its way loose, so I'll check that first. Anything else I should look out for?

The differential mounts are famous for breaking where the damage can't be seen and sometimes not even detectable by grabbing the diff and shaking it. A friend's car appeared to be fine, but we dropped the diff anyway "just in case" and found one of the mounts was almost completely broken through.

Thanks Randall. I jacked up the rear end and pulled the tires off. Turned out that the right rear shock bolts were loose. One was about 1/2 way out. I tightened them up, and then inspected everything else. Everything else looks fine. The Strebo exhaust installed by the PO is starting to show its age. I might just have to put a stock system on -- I love the sound of my fiancee's stock exhaust.
