TR6 HS6 RUNNING TOO RICH ON TR6

I have put HS6 that come from a volvo. It seems that it allways runs too rich on the Tr6. Idle is fine, acceleration is nesitating and gross. Hi speed looks fine but rich sound. I have put TK fixed needles, (from a TR4A) and it was worse... Can I slightly lower the fixed needle to lean it out?

Any other advice would help.

YH, I've been seeing these Volvo carbs being said to be suitable for the TR6.
If your SU's have a float bowl tilted off the vertical when the carb is mounted you might not get them to work.
Those, when mounted on the Volvo manifold, had the float chamber vertical and the carb body ended up at the angle.
The floats need to operate in a vertical position.

Yes poolboy, the floats are tilted. However I wanted to modify the spacer that keep them tilted and put them back straight. Do you think that the fact that they are tilted is a cause of richness?

You might need different float bowls as well as getting them vertical. Just using the correct spacer to make the float bowls vertical can sometimes place the float height above the bridge in the carburetor. Which would cause a rich condition.

hi yvan, i have done this conversion on my car and can tell you for a fact that the volvo float bowls need to be changed. the carbs on a volvo sit on an angle so the floats are on an angle, not only that but if you were to just straighten them by moving the spacer then the bowls sit too high and the fuel level is too high, the fuel is then pushed into the jet and runs real rich. ive had people argue with me on a forum before over this, but talk to joe curto. he can sell you the correct bowls and needles. im using the stock needles from the volvo on my tr6 and they work great. i cant remember how much i paid for the bowls, it want bad though.

With the price of gas what it is, I would invest in the correct carbs and e-bay the volvo units ASAP.weber has some nice 175 side drafts....

Webers are probably another type of carb that you may save gas with but you have to invest in a complete portable tool kit when you go for a ride. I just praise SU'S after having had DGV 32/36 and ZS.
