Thought i would replace the floats on my HS6 carbs as the old ones are a bit bent where the metal part meets the plastic float. However on ordering the floats and fitting they don't open the valve enough to let the fuel in, am i being daft or have i the wrong floats (see picture).

I don't know if this helps or not. To quote Moss Motors, "SU replacement floats with moulded bosses for the pin are the only ones available. To use these & obtain the correct 1/16" to 3/16" gap between the float & lid, a shim may be required under the needle & seat assembly."

It appears that you have the opposite problem of not enough gap. If the float chamber lid gaskets were missing it would effectively lower the float level as you say.

I don't really know what the problem may be but multiple lid gaskets would raise the floats & allow more flow. If the shims between needle seat & carb body are present, maybe they can be removed.

The 1/16 to 3/16 between float & lid should be measured with the spring in the needle not compressed.

Sorry I'm not more help. Maybe someone else will know? See if the attached scan helps.

Dave

My float looks like the one in your bottom right picture, there it says "with the deirin needle" this makes me wonder if i should be using a different needle for this type of float, i will have a look on Burlen's website and see what they show.
Failing that any idea where i can get one of the old type floats from (secondhand)

I can't tell much about your old float from the pic. It appears to have less offset from the top of the float to the pivot point. The pivot appears to be nearly even horizontally with the float top. The new float looks to have more vertical offset between float top & pivot point.

If so, this would drastically lower the effective float level setting. From the pic this would be confirmed by the apparent much larger gap between float top & lid than the prescribed 0.062" to 0.187" prescribed setting. Is the gap actually larger than the prescribed setting as it appears to be in the picture?

If so, the only correction would be a shorter needle and/or seat or raising the seat in the carb top. I suspect that there is a shorter needle & seat assembly available which would allow the correct setting. By all means contact Burlen & they can probably tell you the correct combination of parts & how to set it.

The easy way out would be to put your old floats back in. Maybe the "bend" was required to get the correct float level setting. Do the old floats show the prescribed settings?
