GT6 Exhaust smell when car in motion?

A friend has GT6 that he says has a strong smell of exhaust when the car is in motion. It's been up on a hoist and and there are no obvious entry points for exhaust getting in. He's even tried taping off the louvres on the rear of the roof to see if it was coming in there and it wasn't. He did have a new exhaust system installed but it wasn't the stock setup. The exhaust pipe tips on his car end about 4" back from the end of the rear bumper whereas the stock setup on the GT6 has the end pipe tips extending out past the rear bumper and have a 90 degree bend so the exhaust goes out to the side. Is it possible that when the car is in motion the exhaust gases are somehow seeping into the cockpit because of the shortened pipes he had installed?

Being a '6' owner I'm not too familiar with leak points on the GT6.
However, old or poorly fitted hatch seals are notorious for this sort of thing.
MY MGBGT tends to pull in fumes when the rear side windows are pushed open.

I'll wager it is that nonstock exhaust system. Funny thing about the aerodynamics and airflow around the back of these cars. I had a similar problem many years ago with a '70 GT6+ and a Stebro exhaust: smelled inside and sooted up the whole rear valence something fierce. Reverting to a stock system cured it for me.

Seems to me I remember people being overcome with exhaust fumes while riding in a station wagon with the tailgate window down. I wonder if it is the action by the air going around the car. I wouldn't think the exhaust would get into the car through the louvers.

I'm with Andy's opinion. I'd bet it's the tips not extending far enough to the rear. I've seen that soot on GT6 valences when short pipes are used. Some of that exhaust is probably getting sucked back inside.

It's hard to avoid some kind of vortex, scooping up exhaust odors and circulating it back toward the cabin and boot.
