TR4/4A Clutch Slave mount into cross shaft

Hey, quick question,

I know all the manuals are adamant about mounting the clutch slave pushrod into the middle hole in the cross shaft. However, my car has an extremely heavy clutch peddle which makes it very difficult to modulate the clutch and engage smoothly. So, last year I moved the mount down to the lower hole with the idea that it would provide more leverage and ease peddle effort. It definitely worked. But, now I just wonder if there is some reason the manuals are so adamant on the middle hole and if I am doing some harm by using the lower hole.

Appreciate your thoughts

Bob, you might need the adjustable length shaft, as any ware will show up earlier using the bottom hole. You will want to make sure to don't get too much throw and get the fingers touching the plate. As info, you are not the first to use it. The TR6 can be a bear for city driving, the wife won't drive it until I changed the hole.

I suspect it increases wear in the slave cylinder bore, since having the pushrod at an angle will push the piston sideways against the bore. But since the alternative is pulling the clutch, that seems like an acceptable trade-off to me.

You've probably seen these, but JIC, here's a couple of good articles on TR6 clutch problems. Unfortunately, the solutions all require disassembly.

Hmmm... thanks. That's a lot of info to digest. I do know my Clutch, PP and TOB are a AP Borg & Beck unit. Most likely aftermarket. I note one of the Big 3 has two part numbers on the Borg & Beck unit. One is the coil spring clutch for the TR4 only (adjustable clutch requiring the return spring on the slave cylinder) and the other is the diaphragm clutch for the TR4A (self adjusting with no return spring on the slave). Not sure which one I have since the clutch was installed by PO.

I wouldn't call my clutch sticky but, the pressure is not linear. As you come off the floor with the peddle, the pressure is not too great then about 1/2 up to engagement the pressure increases dramatically and it will catch you off guard.

I have managed with it this way for 13 years. If I keep it adjusted perfectly and have it in the lower cross shaft hole it is pretty reasonable.

Thanks

Bob
