Good morning everyone, I have a 1978 MGB, can the clutch be replaced by removing the transmission from under the car? I don't have an engine lift to pull the engine and transmission out as an assembly. Thanks for any help you can offer

As far as I know, you have to remove the engine to replace the clutch.

It's easier if you pull them as a unit. I would buy, rent or borrow a lift. I think it can be done from below if the car is raised and removing the rear cross-member from the chassis. But the engine must be supported in it's present position, it will not support it's self when the transmission is disconnected or cross-member is out. PJ

Best to pull the engine/trans as one unit, for sure. The trans will NOT be easily removed from underneath. It's asking for more trouble than it's worth, TRUST ME! I hate to be a "Debbie Downer" here but it truly is a lot less work and frustration if both come out & back in together.

I have on a couple occasions removed an engine and tranny (MGB) and engine (Corvette) using a come along and a maple tree branch. Not pretty but serviceable. Only downside, the previously mentioned tree is in my front yard and gathered a LOT of attention.

If your car doesn't have an overdrive, it can be done without removing the engine. I helped do mine at John Twist's. But you need a lift.

And a sling to keep engine & firewall from meeting. Doing it without a proper car lift, on your back is no job worth attempting. Rent an engine crane and do it "by the book."

I have a hoist the you might be able to borrow - there a re a couple of issues, 1. it is deeply buried in my shed, 2. I have no way to get it to you 3. The covid and 4. winter

On the other hand I do need to dig it out in slightly warmer weather to drop the engine into the Vauxhall after which I will return the hoist to its owner. (who is in Guelph and conned me into storing it at my house :D ) - so if you aren't in a hurry maybe we can sort something out.
