Hi, I am about to get a surgery in my left foot, (Achilles tendon rupture) and I want to know if there is an automatic tranny for my 1969 spitfire, I love it because is overdrive but forced to an automatic. If someone knows please let me know.

The only automatic I know of is someone else driving you around. Then the gears change automoatically.

Sorry to hear about the foot. I hope all heals someday and you can go back to a stick shift. Take care and best wishes.

I had to get leg surgery a couple years back. I stupidly sold off my manual tranmission cars and bought myself an automatic. I wish to god I hadn't done that.

I would highly recommend you do nothing to your Spitfire. The way surgeries and healing are these days you'll be suprised how fast you'll be back on your feet. I had 2+ inch bone spur removed from ankle, and had both it and the knee "rebuilt" (e.g. fresh trunnion and ball joint. I was walking again 1 month later, and capable of driving a manual transmission in 6 months.

If I ever get my racer done, I've even got a clean bill of health to go racing again.

Gardener, If your serious PM me and I can tell you what I found out while researching my car. It is do-able but not easily.

Feel free to share that information with all of us. Meanwhile, Standard-Triumph actually did have an automatic gearbox of sorts for the Standard 10 / Triumph 10, cleverly named either "Standrive" or "Triumatic" depending on how the car was badged. Sadly, it was not the most reliable thing and didn't even make it through to the Herald. I mention it only because the Standard 8 and 10 gearbox was essentially the same as that of the Herald and, therefore (albeit with different ratios) the Spitfire! What was neat about the "Standrive" is that it was more or less an automatic clutch, operated with a button on the shift lever, that otherwise kept the rest of the four-speed gearbox. (Coolest of all is that Laycock overdrive was also available in the Standard 10 on either the manual or Standrive gearbox!)
