Automatic choke

What is the easiest way to bypass the automatic choke on the zenith Stromberg carb? The car is a 78mgb, and is running far to rich, it is basically flooding itself to stalling. I have stripped the carb down, cleaned rebuilt etc. Same with the automatic choke, and no change, I honestly think the choke is staying in the full on mode. Any helpful ideas would be great, at this point I am strongly considering removing the single carb and putting a set of dual carbs on it. The carbs on my 74 are far less complicated to putter on. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cowboy.gif

Take the float out and shake it next to your ear and see if there is any gas in it. If it is leaking, that will cause your problem. Also the needle and seat could be bad but you said you rebuilt it so if you used a carb kit that would be taken care of.
Also, if the float is not the soldered metal type for instance, if it is the styrofoam looking material I have seen in some carbs in the past replace it.

If it's legal to remove the automatic choke (emissions related stuff, after all) there are kits available from VB and Moss that convert to a good old fashioned manual choke. I would recommend this over rebuilding the automatic choke, parts for which look kinda pricey.

It's taken me awhile to get back to fixing the automatic choke on my son's car. So here's what I did, first I ordered the manual choke, the automatic will be going by the wayside as soon as it is delivered. In the meantime I actually wired the choke needle full open,(for future reference not a good idea as the idle took off to over 3000rpm once it was warm). At full closed the car stalled so I rewired the needle to about half open. The car still stalls but only when the temperature outside is +25C and the car is idling at an intersection for in excess of two to three minutes. I'm toying with wiring it 1/4 open to see if that stops it all together. I definately am in favour of putting on the manual choke. I have to say the choke on his car has given me more grey hairs than he did growing up. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/lol.gif

Also, dont forget to check the breather hole in the throttle body! Its so tiny it gets clogged easily. Use a thin STIFF wire. Sometimes the residue in there is so hard it needs to be drilled out. You may have thought it was clean after removal but its often overlooked. Double check that the vacuum piston and spring are not sticking (triangular cover on top of choke). Good luck
