Anti-Rattle Spring and Plunger

A few months ago I had to put in a anti-rattle spring and plunger. I'm not sure where the one that should have been in there went. Well it looks like I need to put another one in again. I haven't pulled it apart yet but the gearshift is rattling again just like before. Any ideas on why the spring and plunger might be popping out. I was thinking the little recess where it sits might be worn and the added slop is allowing the spring to pop out. If this is the case what would be the best way to remedy this. Thanks

You think a little longer spring might increase the tension on the plunger and encourage it to stay in place ?

I think a longer/stronger spring will just make the problem worse. Either the lever or the cups it engages with are worn out, most likely the lever.

A longer and/or larger diameter plunger might help it stay in place, but I have no idea where to buy one and fabricating one might be tricky. It's pretty hard, I think.

Scrounging up a used lever in good condition would probably be easier.

Dave at TRF scrounged up a brand-spankin-new shift lever for me a few years back, still had the Cosmolene on it.

just recalling a similar stick shift rattling issue i had after replacing my clutch..

i was ready to order the spring/plunger assembly when someone suggested that the shifter knob might need a good tightening. long story short... i put new nut, flat and lock washers on the stick, twisted on the knob far as it would go. then brought the nut up tight to the knob (as tight as i could go without stripping the nut). noise has not returned.

apologies if this was already obvious to you.
