Accurate - Door Pillar Finishing Welt Piping BJ8

Hello Gang:

My BJ8 Aluminum Door finishers have a black welt running between the finisher and the body. Over the years they have cracked and come partially loose. The piping seems to be a medium fine solid rubber or hard plasic.

I ordered from Moss their replacement part 249-880, which when it arrived today looks different than the one I am taking off. In this case the Moss part is more like a vinyl welt, folded and stitched over a material core to form piping. It also seem to be a bit more chunky than the fine rubber one I am taking off.

Can anyone in the forum let me know which style is correct as original - the hard rubber or vinyl style?

HI Andrew1, it is not made that way any more. you can make it yourself using vinyl cloth and a properly sized rubber core.Alternatively, Maccgregor there in CA may stock it.---Fwiw--Keoke

Sorry Keoke, I appreciate your reply but I don't follow your response.

For the BJ8, is it the solid hard rubber welt piping that is correct or rather the "rolled-over" vinyl piping welt that is correct?

Thanks again.

Hi Andrew!, as far as I know the Vinyl cored material is aftermarket.---Keoke

Andrew, could you post a picture? I'm having a hard time following. My BJ8 is original and I could post a photo tonight.

Thanks, does the same piece continue to the door sill? A felt like piece with a continuous rubber bulb strip attached to it?

Nope .. Keoke isn't fully awake yet /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif What you are describing is the door seal. Here's a few pictures of the door pillar finishing welt piping. Mine was vinyl wrapped over a plastic white core. The all-in-one molded welting does look different and I'm not sure which is correct/original.

I just checked in the Anderson/Moment book and on page 161 it says, "Black grained-vinyl piping separated the rear trim plate from the rear fender along the door opening. This piping extended up and over the top of the trim panel, with its core removed so that it wouldn't catch on the edge of the door when opened and closed."

and the Concours Guidelines .. "On later 6-cylinder models the door shut plate has black, grained vinyl piping separating it from the rear fender. On the 6-cylinder cars after the longbridge cars, the piping extends up and around the top of the shut-face. Careful inspection of original cars indicates the core in the piping was removed at the top where the piping extends over the top of the shut face, so that the piping does not catch on the edge of the door when the door is opened and closed."

Cheers,
John

Andrew - I believe the pieces on my ’66 BJ8 are original. The material appears to be a finely ‘pebbled’ vinyl wrapped around a fibrous (?) cord. The vinyl is a strip about 1-inch wide. The cord, or what’s left of it is, or was, white-ish, and maybe a 1/32” to 1/16” or so in diameter.

The inner 'cord' stops where the door finisher turns towards the front of the car. The vinyl at this point continues and was tucked down behind the finisher. On the photo, I’ve pulled the vinyl up and out.

Hope this helps, Dave
